Legends of Motorsports Momentum Continues to Build at Watkins Glen

Fickle Weather Fails to Dampen Spirits of Historic Racing Faithful

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (June 14, 2010) – Legends of Motorsports, a Bobby Rahal Signature Event, completed the second outing of its inaugural season at historic Watkins Glen International. A celebration of all things 1970's, the weekend featured live music, disco dance parties, autograph sessions, a fan forum and beautiful historic cars from across the country, including a full field of F5000 cars.

Though rain and fog caused delays in Sunday's schedule, it never stopped fans from getting an up-close look at the cherished cars that chose to compete in Legends of Motorsports' sophomore event; cars like the Can-Am race-winning 1968 McLaren M6-B driven by Robert Ryan, or the 1974 Porsche 911 RSR which David Friedman drove to the IMSA GT race victory. Porsche, which was the featured marque, also collected wins in Group C with Zak Brown behind the wheel of a 1986 Porsche 962 and in Thunder and Lightning, where Rob Hurley won in a 1966 Porsche 911. Formula 5000 was the only race that had to be cancelled due to dense fog. The win was awarded to Saturday's qualifying race winner, Steve Davis in a 1969 Eagle Mk5. Marc Giroux closed out the weekend with a Formula Libre win in a 1997 Lola T97/20.

"It was unfortunate that the weather did not cooperate on Sunday," said series co-founder and 1986 Indianapolis 500 winner Bobby Rahal. "That was the only glitch this weekend. We had an amazing field of cars come out for our second event and the spectators really enjoyed the live music, autograph sessions, track touring and fan forum."

Legendary drivers complemented the legendary cars and played a big role in the weekend. In addition to Rahal himself, Sam Posey, Bobby Brown and Doc Bundy were also on hand, as was celebrated Porsche driver Vic Elford, who served as the event Grand Marshal.

"Even with the rain and the fog, it's been a wonderful weekend," Elford, the 24 Hours of Daytona and 12 Hours of Sebring winner said. "The public is receptive and everyone is enjoying it.

"Legends of Motorsports is getting people more involved. It's more fan friendly, more user friendly. I think it's going to be great."

A fan forum led by Elford was one of many activities open to spectators at Watkins Glen. Track touring was offered as were autograph sessions and paddock tours. The Fan Zone featured children's activities, live music, wine tastings and a movie tent playing classic racing films. To re-create the 70's, a Grateful Dead cover band played Friday evening and a Disco Dance Fever party took place Saturday night, complete with a costume contest where the best dressed male and female, Dr. Allan Robbins and Lisa Eblocker, were each awarded a trip to Orlando.

"I spent a lot of time in the campgrounds speaking with our fans and they absolutely loved this weekend," said Michael Printup, President of Watkins Glen International. "It was a great event because it featured Bobby Rahal and a rolling museum of truly classic race cars. This event was really a homecoming for many of the cars as they raced here in their prime during the 1960s and 1970s. There really is nothing better than having these historic cars on our legendary road course."

Legends of Motorsports will keep riding the wave of positive momentum into its third event at Circuit Mont Tremblant in Quebec, Canada, July 9 – 11. There, surrounded by the Laurentian Mountains, in the resort village of Tremblant, Legends of Motorsports will celebrate the "Legends of Quebec" as well as the Ferrari marque.

QUOTE SHEET: LEGENDS OF MOTORSPORTS AT WATKINS GLEN

James Ashe Jr. (Entered Datsun 240Z in Thunder and Lightning):

"We're having a great time. It's fantastic. I'd come again and I'd tell anyone I talk to that's into this to come. It's really professionally run, with the lunch and breakfast and just the way everyone handles themselves. It's very professional."

Seb Coppola (Entered Lola T192 in F5000):

"This is a great organization with great cars here. I'm happy to be here and help put a nice show together. I think Bobby and his crew have done a fantastic job. Everybody is enjoying themselves. The arrangements have been superb. The racing has been superb and we certainly want to come back again."

Vic Elford (Legendary driver and event Grand Marshal):

"Even with the rain and the fog it's been a wonderful weekend. The public is receptive and everyone is enjoying it."

"[Legends of Motorsports] is getting people more involved, it's more fan friendly, it's more user friendly. I think it's going to be great."

Larry Kessler (Entered Chevron B-19 in 2-Liter Sports Cars):

Do not miss a Legends experience. It is the most friendly, more race time, more track time, than any other historic or vintage racing group. If you're out there with a historic car, don't miss it!"

Barbara Brohl (spectator):

"I'm having a great time. It's been great. I've seen some wonderful cars and some very cool people. I even got a ride that was really wonderful around the track. You've got to come out and see it. It's fun."

Sam Posey (Legendary driver and SPEED commentator):

"Historic racing is crucial to motorsports because it keeps alive the tradition and the history of something that actually draws from its past in terms of what's going on today. In other words, you have to understand the past of the sport to really perform well in the present.

"First of all, [historic racing] is a friendly scene. Everybody here is sharing something that they're enthusiastic about. Nobody gets dragged here against their will. It's a friendly, family situation. Secondly, I would say, don't forget how great these cars were. To hear a Formula 5000 car go by with 500 horsepower and that deep throat of exhaust and then hear the upshift – it's pretty damn exciting. I think if people think that vintage racing means little Triumph Spitfires, that's not the whole story. There's a lot of cars out here today that are extremely valuable and extremely fast."

Bobby Rahal Brings New Historic Racing Series to The Glen

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (June 8, 2010) - Less than a month after receiving rave reviews for its debut at Alabama's Barber Motorsports Park, Legends of Motorsports, A Bobby Rahal Signature Event, visits historic Watkins Glen International for the second round of its inaugural season. The weekend will be a family-friendly celebration of the 1970's, with classic rock and disco music, and an F5000 feature race. International racing legend and Grand Marshal Vic Elford will lead a celebration of the weekend's featured marque, Porsche.

Legends of Motorsports strives to brighten the spotlight on historic racing in North America. More than a collection of races featuring rare and beautiful rolling museum pieces, each event is a celebration of the automotive lifestyle. "It was one of the best days of racing I've ever had,"commented one fan after the series' first event. "I took my seven year-old son with me and we had a great father-son day... I told my friends that seeing such historic cars once again 'raced in anger' was a thrill that no other motorsport event can offer."

To welcome all who attend The Glen this weekend, Legends of Motorsports has created a Fan Zone, complete with live radio broadcasts featuring popular local DJs, wine tastings and seminars by the New York Wine and Culinary Center with products from Hazlitt Vineyards, a film tent showing classic racing movies and a kids' zone. Additionally, the International Motor Racing Research Library has organized several Paddock Ambassadors who will be able to conduct tours of the paddock, answer questions and assist spectators who want to learn more about the fascinating cars and people that comprise Legends of Motorsports.

To place fans and participants in a 70's mood, a trackside "Remember the Summer Jam, 1973" barbeque caps off a full day of practice on Friday, June 11. The evening includes live music from The Lost Sailors, a Grateful Dead tribute band plus food and beverages at 1970's prices. WCMF's Brian Robinson will be broadcasting live from the celebration tent all night. Attendees will have a chance to win a lap of The Glen with 1986 Indianapolis 500 winner and Legends of Motorsports co-founder Bobby Rahal himself. The 70's celebration continues with "Saturday Night Disco Fever" on June 12. Attendees are encouraged to dress in their finest 70's wardrobe and vie for the best dressed male and female who will each win a trip to Orlando. Benefiting the International Motor Racing Research Center, tickets for the disco/karaoke party are $20 and do not include a daily admission ticket, which is separate, but not required for admittance to the party. More details about both parties are available at www.legendsofmotorsports.com.

Sunday is all about racing, the way it was at Watkins Glen decades ago. The afternoon features a full grid of F5000 cars for the main event. These winged, open-wheel machines made by the likes of Lola, Chevron, Lotus and March, were a sensation in the 70's. Drivers like Mario Andretti, Jody Scheckter and Brian Redman are but a few who previously raced F5000.

Prior to Sunday's opening ceremonies, spectators are invited to participate in a fan forum with international racing sensation Vic Elford and later an autograph session with both Elford and Rahal.

"Watkins Glen is shaping up to be an amazing weekend," Rahal, the said. "The high caliber of cars entered means the racing will be phenomenal and there are so many attractions away from the track for fans to participate in. I can't wait to celebrate the 70's with everyone at The Glen."

Advance tickets for the full, three-day event are priced at $45. A combined Saturday/Sunday ticket has been set at $35, while a Sunday-only ticket will be $25. Fans can also chose the "Rahal Package" which combines the Legends of Motorsports weekend and the U.S. Vintage Grand Prix in September, plus the exclusive opportunity to meet Bobby Rahal on Saturday, June 12 at noon, all for $75.
